Thalidomide survivor Sabine Becker was born with under-developed arms, but she has learnt to use her feet as though they were hands. She has the ability to dress, brush her hair, apply make up, use a pen and type at a computer – all with just her feet. Sabine can move her toes in the fashion of fingers, gripping and manipulating objects and has the strength and suppleness in her legs to stretch them to her needs. But Sabine’s amazing skill doesn’t stop at the everyday tasks, she drives an unadapted car and creates and sews intricate jewelry and miniature ‘Spirit Dancer’ dolls. ‘I focus on what I can do, not what I can’t do,’ explains Sabine, ‘Everything you do with your hands, I can do with my feet. I had to figure out how to live without arms, and still today I learn new ways to do things differently.’
A year ago Sabine was sent a video of the so-called Surfice dog named Ricochet by a friend. The three year-old golden retriever was originally trained to be a service dog, but enjoyed chasing squirrels and birds a little too much to become certified. Judy Fridono, Ricochet’s owner, decided to train ‘Ric’ to surf instead and realized she could be a big help to those with disabilities, helping them gain mobility and confidence.
Sabine contacted Judy asking if she thought she, as a woman without arms, could learn to surf. Judy encouraged her to travel out to California from her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico and join the organization AmpSurf for their annual surfing event. AmpSurf is a non-profit group that looks to inspire those with disabilities through adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities. At the event Sabine was able to surf for the first time with the help of Ricochet who balanced the board to help her catch the wave.
At this year’s AmpSurf event Judy introduced Sabine to the professional surfer Guy Takayama. He offered to surf tandem with Sabine and helped her to stand up for the first time. Sabine said she found the experience “exhilirating” and, always looking to take on new challenges, she’s aiming to next time surf standing up on her own.
