Sacramento, CA – At the age of 77, Olga Kotelko took up track and field professionally. Fifteen years later, at 93, she has set so many world records for her age group that she now concentrates on making them harder to beat. At the World Masters Athletics Championships where Incredible Features caught up with her, Olga reset three records in her sprinting, throwing and jumping athletic strengths. She has gained 650 gold medals–so many, she gives them away as gifts.
Olga took up playing slow pitch softball when she retired from teaching, but grew bored with the sport as she reached 75. She realized she didn’t want to ‘just sit around and rest and not be challenged’ and so found a trainer and started working on her technique for throwing javelin, shot put and weights, the high and long jump and honing her already established skill for sprinting. Currently she competes without a trainer, and has developed her own exercise schedule to maintain fitness. She is one of very few competitors in their nineties, and in the high jump and long jump, she’s the only one. Her records beat out many of those set by athletes in their eighties.
“It’s not how old you are,” Olga says, “It’s how you get old. It’s about how you feel, and if you feel well and healthy you feel young.” She does not believe she is uniquely talented, and as a motivational speaker advocates exercise and a healthy diet throughout life, believing anyone can remain as fit and strong as her if they take care of their body. “I think anybody can do this, but they must start today. Don’t set barriers for yourself, or procrastinate. Old age isn’t more of a disease than infancy. Love your aging body. It’s never too late to strive for optimum health. We have one body and one mind for life. Use it or lose it,” she argues.
Olga swears by her daily stretch exercises, massages, and deep-breathing exercises. “Good flexibility in your body is crucial. It will keep you healthy, and therefore independent. I am not a burden to my family. I travel the world, meet new people. I chose to become a young-at-heart athlete instead of an old woman. I always want to feel young, healthy, and capable–and yes, sexy too!”
