From the casual observer, the Luck family could be like any other; with the exception that there are two sets of adults sharing the same house. But that’s only the beginning of it.
Tony Luck, his wife Kaye, his friend Kevin, and his wife Sandi all live and sleep together in a rare “group marriage.” This polyamorous San Jose, California family has been together for 13 years, sharing ownership of their house, bank accounts and legal guardianship of Sandi and Kevin’s eleven year old daughter, Ruth. Those that can’t understand or tolerate polyamorous relationships object to raising a child in such an unusual situation. Ruth however, feels quite differently. In her eyes, she gets four times the amount of love from all of her parents and understands not all families are like hers.
The foursome began after Kevin and Sandi, who are legally married, went to stay with, Tony and Kaye, who were married and friends of theirs at the time. In an unexpected twist, Tony and Kaye both fell in love with Sandi and a new type of family emerged. The newly formed foursome moved into a house together and now call themselves, simply, the Lucks. In this complicated and tangled love square, the sleeping situation is a bit like connect-the-dots. Tony and Kevin do not engage in relations with each other however the women do. Both men share both women and each couple has their own bed in their shared bedroom although there is no divider or wall separating the two beds.
Regardless of how unusual anyone views their relationship, the Lucks say it works for them. They all work together, pitching in to make household decisions as well as sharing the responsibility for a family business called Sandi’s Yarns.
